SoundTransit is a project which skillfully combines the realms of field recording and the social web. Or the realms of geo-mapping and phonography, if you feel that way inclined. Set up as a mock travel agency, it allows visitors to “book” travels from one point of the globe to another, and then plots their route by using field recordings of the various stopovers between their point of departure and their point of arrival. The resulting audio palimpsest can then be downloaded as an mp3 file.

SoundTransit is a collaborative, online community dedicated to field recording and phonography. On this site, you can plan a sonic journey through various locations recorded around the world, or you can search the database for specific sounds by different artists from certain places. If you are a phonographer, you can also contribute your recordings for others to enjoy. The Creative Commons Attribution license encourages the sharing and reuse of all sounds on this website.
The project was started by a collective lead by soundartist Derek Holzer. Theresa Schubert has a cool interview with him at her soundslikemusic podcast.
Myself, well, I’m simply amazed. Still, after “booking” a few trips around the globe, I realized that there were no field recordings of Madrid available in SoundTransit’s database. So, yes, indeed, you can contribute your own field recordings – you simply have to contact Derek with your proposal. And you need to release your work under a Creative Commons Attribution Licence.
